Adkins’ maternal uncle, James W. Carraway, was a Christian musician.

While playing at Tillie and Lucy’s bar in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Capitol Nashville’s musician Scott Hendricks spotted Adkins and signed him from where his official music career began.
